Boy Scout Campout

Greeting Webelos Scouts,

Troop 811 has once again invited our Webelos Scouts to an overnighter with the troop in the SAM grove.  Webelos will be taught firemaking, knots, first aid, and other Scouting skills.  The overnighter starts on Saturday, Nov 21 at noon, and concludes by 10am on Sunday.   A parent is welcome, but not required to attend.  A parent may opt to drop off their Webslos Scout at noon, stay for dinner and the campfire on Saturday only, or spend the night.  There is no charge for Webelos Scouts, and a $5 charge for parents who stay for dinner.  Note this is a requirement for the AOL badge.  See more information on the flyer below.

Please let us know if you can make it on our sign up page HERE.

Sign Up Now for Camp Cherry Valley

Attention Bear & Webelos Families – It’s time to sign up for Camp Cherry Valley this summer!

The Webelos Resident Camp runs Thursday, August 13th through Sunday, August 16th.  The theme this year will be “Knights of the Campfire,” meaning activities and campfires will feature themes of medieval knighthood.   Scouts, adults, and staff wear costumes with that theme for campfires.  Camp Cherry Valley is well-known for its location on Catalina Island, which includes access to the ocean, traditional facilities, good food, and the best staff of any Webelos resident camp.  Activities include snorkeling, fishing, archery, BB guns, kayaking, hiking, and a marine lab.  Travel to and from the camp is via ferry between Long Beach and Two Harbors.  Each Scout and a parent sleep in a two-man canvas tent which are provided.  Camp Cherry Valley is a true Boy Scout camp that opens its doors to Webelos scouts for a couple sessions each year. Photos from previous years are posted in our Photo Albums, a video can be see HERE, and further details are available in the Leader Guide.

If we have enough boys sign up, we will have our own patrol and own campsite.   Reservations for the camp opened in January, and they will fill up very soon.   Please SIGN UP by May 24 if your son will attend.  I will make a group reservation the next day and collect money by the June 10th campfire.  The total cost (including the boat trip and all meals) is $235 per Cub Scout, and $175 per adult.  Checks should be made to “Pack 811”.   No siblings are allowed, and adults are optional.

A few final thoughts.  This camp is optional.  Summer, and August in particular, can be a busy time.  However, Cherry Valley is a memorable experience for Scouts and parents alike.  It will truly prepare your son for what lays ahead in Boy Scouts. Please let me know if your Scout can attend.  If you cannot commit now, you have the option of making your own reservations, but there is no guarantee there will be space.  As a result, we encourage an early group reservation as the best way to guarantee spots and keep everyone together. If you have any questions, many of the Webelos dads can give you the scoop.

Yours in Scouting,

Jim

Blackhawks Get Crafty

Guest Columnist Vincent A. reports on his experience building a candy dish for his Craftsman badge.  The Blackhawks are currently working on their Communicator badge, and have submitted articles to share with the pack on our website.

Have you ever made a candy dish out of a license plate? Well, that’s exactly what we did in one of our den meetings. First, we got an old license plate. Then we had to hammer it with a mallet. It was really loud.

Be careful! You might smash your hand. After, we cut the ends of the plate which made it jagged. Next, we had to fold the ends with tweezers and shape it into a box. I use my box to put things like pens, a game ball, and a medal. This was such a fun activity. I hope you get to do the same thing.

BlackHawks Are Going Camping!

OsoLake_Color-WebThe Webelos I Blackhawk Patrol will be camping at Oso Lake on the weekend of September 12th-14th.  Our Webelos Scouts, along with one parent, will be camping as a patrol and earning the Forester, Naturalist, Geologist, and Outdoorsman Activity.

Unlike Family Camp, our boys will be responsible for setting up camp, cooking, and cleanup. A parent will be present to guide them.  The cost of the weekend is $45 for each Scout – Parent team, plus the cost of food (which will be determined after the boys make their menu).

This is a very important “transitional” outing for our Webelos as they get ready to become Boy Scouts.  We will need to reserve our spots at Oso very soon, so we need all Blackhawks to RSVP within the next 10 days.  Please let us know if you can make it on our Sign-Up page HERE.

Blackhawks Invade Newport Bay with Kayaks

The Webelos I Blackhawk Patrol spend Saturday morning in Kayaks near the Newport Sea Base.  The Scouts paddled through the bay and ended up stopping for a swim at a beach. Many of the Scouts allowed their Dad to have a free ride in the back of the kayak, while others got their Dad or Mom to paddle in sync with them.  All the boys arrived back safely, and only a few adults were seen with crooked backs when they returned. After drying off, the Scouts voted on their patrol name, with the “Blackhawk Patrol” narrowly beating out the “Sizzling Bacon Patrol” as the name of choice.  The patrol also elected their first Denner – Patrol leader : Mitchel D., and assistant Joshua W.  It was a great first outing for the new Webelos, with many great adventures ahead.  Pictures of the event can be found in our Photo Albums.

Webelos Resident Camp Signups

Good Afternoon Bears and Webelos Scouts,

As we previously communicated, we have two options for Webelos Resident Camp this summer.  It is now time to sign up to reserve your spot!  A 50% deposit is required in order to reserve the spot, and spots are filling up quick!  We will be collecting payments at the Pack Meeting next Sunday.   Note that it is highly recommended, but not required, for a parent to attend the camp with their Scout.  It they choose not to attend, then they must find another adult who will agree to be responsible for their son during the event.  No siblings are allowed.

3fallslogoOption 1:  Camp 3 Falls on June 29 – July 2.  Cost is $195 per scout, and $105 per parent. More information can be found HERE.  Vicky Ladjevic will be coordinating this event for us this year.  Please confirm directly with her (vladjevic818@gmail.com) to hold your spot, and give her a check (made out to Ventura County Council, BSA) for at least 50% of the total amount due no later than this coming Sunday, April 27th.

Option 2:  Camp Cherry Valley on August 10 – 13.  Cost is $235 per scout, and $175 per parent.  A video about the camp can be found HERE.  I (Jim Remley) will be coordinating this event.  Please confirm your spot with me, and get me a check (made out to San Gabriel Valley Council, BSA) for 50% of the total amount due no later than Sunday.

Again, this is a very memorable outing that your Scout will likely remember as the highlight of his Cub Scouting years.  Both of these camps are real “Boy Scout” camps that open their doors to Webelos for a few weeks in the year.  Feel free to contact Vicki or myself if you have any questions.

Yours in Scouting,

Jim Remley

Tigers Invade the Grocery Store

Hungry Tigers invaded the Stater Brothers grocery store on Friday, taking a tour of their behind-the-scenes operation, while learning about different fruits and vegetables. The streak of Tigers were able to forage some string cheese and cookies, making them just a little less hungry.  Check out the pics in our photo album.

Tigers Roam the Hills of Oak Canyon

The Tiger Den roared through Oak Canyon Nature Center last weekend.   The fearless group hiked high and low, enjoying the natural beauty of the canyon, and followed the leave-no-trace principles that they learned in their den meeting.  No animal or stick was harmed.  The boys did a great job of keeping a pace that even their parents could keep up with.  Check out more pictures of the fun afternoon in our photo albums.
