Camp Cherry Valley Deposits Due

Hi there Bears and Webelos…

Its time to get our reservation sent in for our camp Aug 21-24… It will be a busy month in August with Family Camp earlier that month… so I am here to help coordinate the sending in of deposits ONLY for Camp Cherry Valley on Catalina Island.

I spoke with Maggie at the San Gabriel Council today for an update on how many spots were left for us to sign up… she said that we are in great shape if we get the Deposits ( 25%) to her by Feb 1st. Payments in full are also welcomed.

So… if you are still interested in going… please get the check ready payable to the San Gabriel Council and I can get it from you either this weekend at Pinewood Derby or during the week next week. I will cut off accepting $$ on Jan 30th at Catholic School’s open house.

If you are still up in the air, you are more than welcome to wait but you will have to coordinate with Maggie for a spot, etc. just as an fyi… the spots are usually sold out by the end of Feb.

This camp is a super busy, all day fun filled camp.. the cost covers the ride over and back on

the boat, food, a tent is provided for you and they do a SUPER great job at food and providing FUN. In addition, those who go must take a swim test ( Adults also) and the 3 days usually fulfills half of the requirements of the 18 months of Webelos… that in itself is a WIN WIN!

Usually one scout and one parent go.. the tents are- 2 man- and in the past there has been a nightly contest for the loudest snorers…

So…. anyone interested???

Yours in scouting,

Webelos II Become Astronomers

griffith_observatory_dec_2010-3 The Webelos 2 Cobras den visited the Griffith Observatory on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The hike to the Hollywood sign was cancelled due to rain, but everyone enjoyed the wet day at the observatory. The den toured the exhibits inside the observatory and watched a cosmology show in the planetarium. See the den photo album for photos.

Wolves Show Their Christmas Spirit

The Wolf Den showed their Christmas Spirit this month when they sang Christmas carols to the the wonderful residents of the Emertus Senior Home in Brea. More than a dozen scouts did a great job of singing classic songs such as Silent Night, Joy to the World, and of course, Santa Clause is coming to Town. Thanks to Paul Hinz who accompanied the scouts on piano. Following the recital, the scouts passed out Christmas cards that they had created in their den meeting a week before to over 70 residents. Some of the residents did not want the show to end. Hot chocolate and Christmas cookies were enjoyed afterwords.   All of the scouts brought a little more joy to the world that evening.  See a video of the singing wolves in the Photo Albums.

Webelos II Know How to Fix Things

The Webelos 2 Cobras den spent Sunday afternoon earning their Handyman activity pin. The scouts (1) learned how to and demonstrated checking the oil and tire pressure on a car, (2)helped change a tire on a car, (3) learned and showed how to maintain and fix their own bikes, and (4) demonstrated how to change a light bulb. The scouts all did very good work in showing their handyman skills. Thanks go to parents John and Anthony for running the bike and car repair stations. Also, thanks go to Carolyn for making a delicious snack for the den.

Webelos II Trek Through Chino Hills State Park

The Webelos 2 Cobras den took a bike trek through Chino Hills State Park today. They started at the West end of the park and rode up Telegraph Canyon trail to the middle of the park before heading back. The seven scouts that participated rode for a total distance of 10 miles. The den saw some birds, but no other wildlife. The scouts did have some fun riding through a muddy puddle on the way back to the cars. Pictures of the outing are in the den 1 photo albums.

Winning Wolves to go on a Lasertag Adventure!

The results are in, and once again, Den 4 has led the pack in in popcorn sales! Sixteen boys sold a total of $7,262 in product, or an average of $454 per scout.  This represents over 40% of the total sales for the pack!   As a reward for this great achievement, the Wolves will receive a fun outing of Lasertag, Pizza, and Video Games.    We will be going out on Monday, December 20th from 12:00 to 2:30 (the first day of Christmas vacation).

Webelos II See Play and Earn Showman Pin

The Webelos 2 Cobras den spent the month of October finishing the Showman activity pin that we started in September. A night of music was enjoyed by all at the October den meeting. On Saturday, Oct. 16th, the den went to Fullerton College and was thrilled and chilled by a dramatic performance of the play ‘Frankenstein.’

Wolves Soar at the Miramar Airshow

img_9714Den 4 families spent the day at the Miramar Marine Corp base last weekend for an impressive display of military and civilian air power. Scouts were able to see and touch dozens of aircraft of all kind, climb up jets and walk through a vast C17 cargo plane.  Among fiery explosions, the Marines made a landing from helicopters and secured the runway.  The boys could almost touch the military tanks as they rolled by our spot on the tarmac.  The show ended with the famous Blue Angels doing acrobatic maneuvers directly overhead.  Thanks to Art Narmi who initiated and coordinated this awesome outing.  Check out more impressive pictures in the Wolf Photo Album.

Webelos II Kayak the Upper Newport Bay

The Webelos 2 Cobras den headed south today to the Newport Aquatic Center and took a two hour kayaking tour of the upper Newport Bay with a naturalist. The naturalist guided us up the bay into the estuary, and educated all of us on the aquatic and bird life in the bay. We saw great blue herons, skimmers, snowy egrets, and may other birds. It was an exciting adventure with the bonus of avoiding the scorching heat in Brea that morning. In addition to the tour, Casey J. and Kalel G. earned their Naturalist activity pin. Pictures of the outing are in the den 1 photo albums.

Wolves Take Flight

The Wolf Den took to the sky last Friday evening when they built and flew their hand made kites. Using scissors, a saw, a yard stick, and a few raw materials, the boys crafted a version of Ben Franklin’s classic Diamond kite. Once completing the exacting steps, the boys managed to get the kites in the air despite the lack of any type of wind.  A special thanks to Paul Hinz who prepared all the materials and helped bring the kites to life. See the pictures of the great kite adventure in the photo albums.
