The Stealth Ninja Webelos Den spent a July Saturday morning exploring the flora and fauna of the Angeles National Forest. After a brief encounter with a brown bear, the den hiked to Sturtevant’s Falls and paused for a small snack and photos. Most scouts got a just a little wet crossing the many streams that crossed the trail, but otherwise did a great job of following the Leave No Trace principles. Photos of the event can be found in the Photo Albums.

Tigers Invade the Grocery Store
Hungry Tigers invaded the Stater Brothers grocery store on Friday, taking a tour of their behind-the-scenes operation, while learning about different fruits and vegetables. The streak of Tigers were able to forage some string cheese and cookies, making them just a little less hungry. Check out the pics in our photo album.
Family Camp 2012
Mighty Bears Zip Over the OC
The Mighty Bear Den went Zip-Lining at the OC Outdoor Education Center last weekend, flying through the air with the greatest of ease. The Scouts got their land legs back just in time for the day’s adventure after their kayaking excursion the week before. Only a few bugs were eaten before the flying bears learned to keep their mouth closed during flight. One parent even allowed the staff to demonstrate their their latest rescue technique. A great time was had by all once again. Check out the pics below, and more in our photo albums.
Bears Take Over Newport Harbor
The Mighty Bear Den boarded kayaks in Newport Harbor last weekend, maneuvering their small crafts around sailboats, yachts, and other vessels in the harbor. Some Bears had to row with their parent as dead weight behind them. One parent and scout team even demonstrated a man-over-board drill. A great time was had by all. Check out the photos below and more in the photo albums.
Tigers Roam the Hills of Oak Canyon
The Tiger Den roared through Oak Canyon Nature Center last weekend. The fearless group hiked high and low, enjoying the natural beauty of the canyon, and followed the leave-no-trace principles that they learned in their den meeting. No animal or stick was harmed. The boys did a great job of keeping a pace that even their parents could keep up with. Check out more pictures of the fun afternoon in our photo albums.
Troop 811 Fundraiser at Lomeli’s
Hi Pack Families,
Our friends in Boy Scout Troop 811 are have a fundraiser next Tuesday, May 1st, at Lomeli’s Italian Restaurant. All we are being asked to do is to enjoy a delicious Italian lunch or dinner, and give THIS FLYER to the server. Lomeli’s will donate 20% of your bill to the the troop for their summer camp. Many of the boys in Troop 811 started their scouting careers here in our Pack. It would be great if we can continue to support them.
Help Plant a Tree this Thursday
All Cub Scouts are invited to help the city of Brea plant trees in celebration of Arbor Day this Thursday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. in the afternoon. Scouts will meet at Founder’s Park, which is located near the NW corner of Berry Street and Central Avenue in Brea (you may also google 777 Skyler Way, Brea, 92821). Please wear your yellow Class-B shirt along with pants and shoes that can get dirty.
Every tree improves our air quality – read more about Arbor Day here: http://www.arborday.org/arborday/. This service project also fulfills a requirement for the World Conservation Award. Hope to see everyone there.
Bring a Friend to our Ice Cream Social
Do you have a classmate, team mate, or friend that might be interested in joining Cub Scouts? Invite them to our Ice Cream Social this Sunday and show them the fun we have. Boys who bring a friend that joins the pack will receive a “Recruiter” patch. Click on the image to the right to view and print a flyer that you can hand out at your next sport practice or bring it to school to give to your friends.
If you can make it this Sunday, please be sure to wear your full Class A uniform. Parents can help answer questions from new parents, and scouts can help demonstrate sling shots and air rockets.
Oh .. and don’t forget – we will be serving ice cream! Hope to see you there.
Day Camp Sign-up is On!
Summer Day Camp Sign Ups are now on-line. Because so many of our boys had a great time last year and were able to complete the majority of their rank, once again we will camp with the Portolo District at Firestone Scout Camp. Summer camp is the highlight of a Cub Scout’s summer – providing 5 full days of fun and opportunities for rank advancement. As usual, we will need to provide adult volunteers in the ratio of 1:4 for each of the 5 days.
You will need to register on our site HERE. On the same page you can download the registration forms for your scout(s) and yourself.
On the registration forms, be sure to “Portola 7/23-27′, and the rank your scout will be in the summer time (which is one rank higher than he is currently). DO NOT CHECK which days you will be volunteering — you will record this information on our on-line sign up form. Please also record your shirt size no matter how many days you are volunteering. Please submit these forms with payment to Amy Hinz on or before May 4th.
The payment amount should be:
$95 – If your family sold at least one book of Scout O Rama tickets, AND forms and payment are turned in by May 4th. That’s less than $20 a day for the most fun your son will have this summer.
$115 – If forms and payment are received by the 4th, and the you did not purchase or sell a Scout O Rama book.
$130 – If forms and payment are received after May 9.
One shirt is included in the above pricing. Add $10 per extra shirt if desired. Checks should be made out to “Pack 811”.
Be sure to jump on the opportunity as soon as possible. Please contact Amy Hinz with any questions.
Yours in Scouting,
Jim Remley
Pack 811 Earns Gold
Pack 811 has been awarded the Gold Level Journey of Excellence award for 2011. This award is only awarded to packs which achieve excellence in a variety of areas, including fully trained leadership, service projects, outdoor activities, financial and activity planning, and at least 1 pack and 2 den events each month.
This is another tribute to the great community of families that make up Pack 811. The pack’s flag will add another ribbon, and each scout attending the Pack meeting this Sunday will receive a patch to wear on their right uniform sleeve. Congratulations Pack 811!
Pack Leader Awarded District Award
Our own Jim Root was recently honored at the annual Orange County Portola District Awards dinner that was held last Thursday evening. Jim, our Religious Awards Coordinator for the past 4 years, received the districts “Extra Mile” award which is awarded to adult leaders who go out of their way to help whenever and wherever needed. Jim has certainly answered the call whenever needed to make our program what it is today. Congratulations Jim!
