Arbor Day Service Project – April 25th

arbor-day-graphic

All Pack 811 scouts are invited to join us for our Arbor Day service project on Thursday, April 25th at Arovista Park.  We will be assisting the City of Brea with the planting of trees at the park.  Scouts should meet on the east side at the amphitheater in the park at 3:30 in the afternoon in their Class B Tshirts.   This is a great opportunity to help put more trees in our city, and complete a conservation service project for an achievement.  Please contact Peter Gambino with any questions.

Memorial Day Service Project

In Honor of our Military Heroes
Hi Scouts,

Our pack will be participating in Loma Vista Park’s  75th Annual Memorial Day Program.  We will be laying small flags and crosses on the graves of our brave service men and women who are buried there.  This a wonderful event for both scouts and parents as we say “thank you” to those who served our country so well.

We will meet at Loma Vista at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013, dressed in our Class A uniforms.

Yours in Scouting,

Pack 811 Cub Scouts Earn Religious Emblems

On January 26th, Fr. Michael Hanifin, Chaplin for the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, celebrated Mass with Catholic Scouts and families from Orange County, and medals were presented to Scouts who earned religious emblems.

To encourage Scouts to fulfill their Duty to God, two programs for Catholic Cub Scouts – Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei – help boys strengthen their relationship with Christ and the Church, and develop greater appreciation for God’s creation and the importance of serving others.

Pack 811 proudly congratulates our Cub Scouts for earning their well-deserved emblems, and for their parents and families who supported them!

Scouts Zoom to Victory at Pinewood Derby

5-race-11  Another exciting Pinewood Derby was conducted last Sunday, with over 50 scouts vying for the coveted first place race trophy and various design ribbons. Our brand new shiny track was used for the first time, purchased in part thanks to the generosity of the Brea Rotary Club.

As the pit crew learned to master the new track and timing software, all in attendance watched closely as their favorite car raced down the 49 feet of track at the “equivalent” of 300+ miles per hour.

0-2013cars First Place: Ian R. with his car “Minecraftopia”
Second Place: Jacob B. with his car “The Stealth Mobile”
Third Place: Collin H. with his car “Midnight Patriot “

Of course, this fun event could not have taken place without the dedicated volunteer pit crew led by Event Chair Warren Biederstadt. This crew took care of the hundreds of details required for such an event, including activites such as assembling, decorating, procuring, cooking, operating, printing, recording, calculating, announcing, cleaning, and inspiring. This crew included:

Warren Biederstadt, Paul Hinz, Amy Hinz, Peter Gambino, John DiMario, Mari Remley, Dean Gialamas, Matt Sikes, Brad Halderman, Shawn Jamison, Jo Rivera, Scott Wemple, Jeff McEntee, John Koos, Jim Remley, and Christian Lising. Of course, this list does not include the many other parents who jumped in to help whenever they saw a need.

Our great volunteers is what makes our pack so great! Check out some photos from the event in the Albums. If you have some pictures from the event that you can share, please upload them for all to enjoy.

Congratulations Scouts, and thank you parents!

Brea Rotary Supports Brea Cub Scouts at Annual Pinewood Derby Event

Cub Scout Pack 811

PRESS RELEASE

Brea Rotary Supports Brea Cub Scouts at Annual Pinewood Derby Event

January 28, 2013

Brea Rotary presented a check for $1,000 to Brea Cub Scout Pack 811 to offset the cost of their new “Pinewood Derby” track.  “Brea Rotary is proud to support Brea scouting, and we have done so for years.  When we learned that they needed a new track for their annual Pinewood Derby, we wanted to help”, said President Scott Elliott.  The ceremonial check was presented at the 2013 Pinewood Derby event, held at 1:30pm, Sunday, January 27th, at St. Angela Merici Church in Brea.

“We are honored that Rotary wants to support our Pack in this way.  After using the same track for over fifteen years, it was pretty beat up.  The new track is made of aluminum and will be available for generations of Cub Scouts to come.”, remarked Jim Remley, Pack 811 Committee Chair.  “We truly value our relationship with the Rotary Club and plan to commemorate their generosity with a permanent plaque affixed to our new track.”

About Cub Scout Pack 811 (Brea)

Since 1979, Pack 811 has provided a nurturing environment for scouts to reach their full potential.  The Pack’s charter is held by St. Angela Merici Church in Brea. More information about Pack 811 can be found on their website at www.cubpack811.org.

About Brea Rotary

The Rotary Club of Brea, founded in 1958, is one of the most active and respected service clubs in North Orange County.  Over the decades, it has been a forum for individuals who share in the spirit of service to the local and international community, giving tens of thousands of dollars to worthy causes annually.

About the “Pinewood Derby”

The Pinewood Derby is a racing event for Cub Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America.  Cubs Scouts, with parental assistance, build small cars from wood, plastic wheels, and metal axles.  The Pinewood Derby was founded in 1953 by Cubmaster Don Murphy, in Manhattan Beach, California.  The Pinewood Derby was named one of Reader’s Digest’s “America’s 100 Best” as a “celebrated rite of Spring.”  Similar Scouting events include the Raingutter Regatta and the Space Derby.

Invitation to Blue and Gold

You are Coordually Invited…

…to our Blue and Gold Banquet on Sunday, February 17, 2013, at 4:00pm in the St. Angela Hall.  This is a special night for our pack as it marks the 83rd anniversary of Cub Scouting.  It is particularly memorable for our boys as many of them will be awarded their new rank, and the Webelos II will be transitioning into Boy Scouts.

Because of the limited space in the hall, this invitation is limited to scouts and their immediate families only (parent/guardians and siblings).  Please send us your RSVP through this

> LINK <

no later than Friday, February 8th.

Please note the date previously on our calendar was incorrect. We are looking forward to another fun celebration with our entire pack family.  The leaders will have a special presentation you will not want to miss!

Camp Cherry Valley

Bear & Webelos I Families –

It’s time to make plans for Camp Cherry Valley this summer!   “Cub Resident Camp” runs 8/15/13 – 8/18/13.  The theme this year will be “Native American Adventure Island,” meaning activities and campfires will feature the adventures of native American life.  Scouts, adults, and staff wear costumes with that theme for campfires.  Camp Cherry Valley is well-known for its location on Catalina Island, which includes access to the ocean, traditional facilities, and good food.  Activities include snorkeling, fishing, archery, BB guns, kayaking, hiking, and a marine lab.  Travel to and from the camp is via ferry between Long Beach and Two Harbors.  Each Scout and a parent sleep in a two-man canvas tent which are provided.  Note: CCV is a true Boy Scout camp that opens its doors to Bears and Webelos for a couple sessions each year.

Photos from last year are posted on the Pack website, and further details are available at the San Gabriel Council website:  http://www.sgvcbsa.org/files/downloads/camping/cherry_valley/2013_CCV_CRC_Guide.pdf

Because our current Webelos I and Bear dens are very active, we may have a large contingent from Pack 811.  That will add to the fun, but with Cherry Valley being extremely popular, we must make group reservations ASAP.

Please let me know by Jan. 20 if your son will attend and who will accompany him.  Once we have a tally, I will make a group reservation and collect money by Jan. 27 (Pinewood Derby).  The total cost (including the boat trip and all meals) is $235 per Cub Scout, and $175 per adult.  At least 50% of the cost is needed to hold each spot.  Checks should be made to “San Gabriel Valley Council.”  No siblings are allowed, and adults are optional.

A few final thoughts.  This camp is optional.  Summer, and August in particular, can be a busy time, and the cost is significant.  However, Cherry Valley is a memorable experience for Scouts and parents alike.  It will truly prepare your son for what lays ahead in Boy Scouts.  Please let me know if your Scout can attend.  If you cannot commit now, you have the option of making your own reservations, but the camp fills up quickly.  As a result, we encourage an early group reservation as the best way to guarantee spots and keep everyone together.

If you have any questions, most of the Webelos dads can give you the scoop.  Or feel free to shoot me an email, hinz@roadrunner.com or call me, 562-243-5869.

Yours in Scouting,
Paul Hinz

Jojo’s Pizza Fundraiser – January 17, 2013

Pack Families,

Happy new year!  Jojo’s Pizza in Downtown Brea is our next big fundraiser for the pack.  We had a very successful event at Five Guys Burgers and Fries and appreciate all pack families and friends of our pack for attending.  Jojo’s will contribute FIFTY PERCENT of all pizza and “loose” pasta sales to our pack (“loose pasta” basically is spaghetti).  Like with the Five Guys and Red Brick restaurant fundraisers, don’t be shy in sending out the attached flyer to everyone you know.  You do not have to be a pack family to participate in the fundraiser.

The event is Thursday, January 17, 2013.  Remember that you MUST present the flyer in order for our pack to receive credit.  Please  click on the image to download and print a few for your friends as well.  JoJo’s is located at 120 S. Brea Blvd, #106.

I look forward to seeing you all there!

Yours in Scouting,

John Koos
Assistant Cubmaster

Tigers Rock the Airways at KBPK 90.1

The Tigers “Go See It” to local radio station KBPK 90.1 at Fullerton College was a blast.  While at the facility on Sat. December 8, the program director gave us a tour and explained how music and programming gets transmitted from their radio station to your home and car.  He kept it fun and entertaining for the scouts.  The Tigers had a special opportunity to record their voices advertising the call letters and frequency of the station which was played back on the radio the following day!  They especially got a kick hearing their voices modified to sound higher like chipmunks and lower like older folks.

Cubmaster Receives Bronze Pelican Award

Pack 811 proudly announces that our Cubmaster Christian Lising has been awarded a Bronze Pelican for his dedicated service to youth and his commitment to the Catholic Scouting movement.  The pelican is an ancient symbol in the Church denoting care for young people, which Cubmaster Lising has exemplified as a dynamic den and pack leader and a model member of the Church and community.  The award was conferred by the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Diocese of Orange at a ceremony on Sunday, December 9, 2012, at the Marywood Center.  Join us in congratulating Mr. Lising!

The Stealth Ninjas Camp in December

The Stealth Ninjas braved the cold and rain at Oso Lake this past weekend. The 10 brave Webelos attended the Great Outdoors Webelos Camp out, and earned their Forester, Geologist, Naturalist, and Outdoorsman Activity Badges. The boys prepared their own foil dinners and sticky buns over hot coals for their main meal, and enjoyed plenty of bacon for breakfast. Dad’s were able to see just a glimpse in the future as they saw their boys practice some self-sufficiency Boy Scout style. A great time was had by all. A few photos can be found in the albums.

The Stealth Ninjas Prepare for Advent

The Webelos Den completed an achievement for their Craftsman badge last weekend, and celebrated the first Sunday of Advent by creating advent wreaths for their own family tables.
The boys learned about type of saws and their usage.  The Scouts cut precise wood components using nothing more than a stick of wood, a mitre box, a hand saw, and a whole lot of muscle. The boys then assembled the pieces to create a wooden wreath. Some choose to stain their wreath, and others choose a natural wood. All Scouts will use their creation to help prepare their hearts for the coming of Jesus this season.
