Camp Cherry Valley

Bear & Webelos I Families –

It’s time to make plans for Camp Cherry Valley this summer!   “Cub Resident Camp” runs 8/15/13 – 8/18/13.  The theme this year will be “Native American Adventure Island,” meaning activities and campfires will feature the adventures of native American life.  Scouts, adults, and staff wear costumes with that theme for campfires.  Camp Cherry Valley is well-known for its location on Catalina Island, which includes access to the ocean, traditional facilities, and good food.  Activities include snorkeling, fishing, archery, BB guns, kayaking, hiking, and a marine lab.  Travel to and from the camp is via ferry between Long Beach and Two Harbors.  Each Scout and a parent sleep in a two-man canvas tent which are provided.  Note: CCV is a true Boy Scout camp that opens its doors to Bears and Webelos for a couple sessions each year.

Photos from last year are posted on the Pack website, and further details are available at the San Gabriel Council website:  http://www.sgvcbsa.org/files/downloads/camping/cherry_valley/2013_CCV_CRC_Guide.pdf

Because our current Webelos I and Bear dens are very active, we may have a large contingent from Pack 811.  That will add to the fun, but with Cherry Valley being extremely popular, we must make group reservations ASAP.

Please let me know by Jan. 20 if your son will attend and who will accompany him.  Once we have a tally, I will make a group reservation and collect money by Jan. 27 (Pinewood Derby).  The total cost (including the boat trip and all meals) is $235 per Cub Scout, and $175 per adult.  At least 50% of the cost is needed to hold each spot.  Checks should be made to “San Gabriel Valley Council.”  No siblings are allowed, and adults are optional.

A few final thoughts.  This camp is optional.  Summer, and August in particular, can be a busy time, and the cost is significant.  However, Cherry Valley is a memorable experience for Scouts and parents alike.  It will truly prepare your son for what lays ahead in Boy Scouts.  Please let me know if your Scout can attend.  If you cannot commit now, you have the option of making your own reservations, but the camp fills up quickly.  As a result, we encourage an early group reservation as the best way to guarantee spots and keep everyone together.

If you have any questions, most of the Webelos dads can give you the scoop.  Or feel free to shoot me an email, hinz@roadrunner.com or call me, 562-243-5869.

Yours in Scouting,
Paul Hinz
