Pack 811 Cub Scouts Earn Religious Emblems

On January 26th, Fr. Michael Hanifin, Chaplin for the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, celebrated Mass with Catholic Scouts and families from Orange County, and medals were presented to Scouts who earned religious emblems.

To encourage Scouts to fulfill their Duty to God, two programs for Catholic Cub Scouts – Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei – help boys strengthen their relationship with Christ and the Church, and develop greater appreciation for God’s creation and the importance of serving others.

Pack 811 proudly congratulates our Cub Scouts for earning their well-deserved emblems, and for their parents and families who supported them!

At the same ceremony, the Catholic Committe on Scouting for the Diocese of Orange also honored Pack 811 with the Pope Paul VI Quality Catholic Unit Award. This year, the award was given to only 2 Catholic Scouting units in Orange County that provide exceptional, all-around recruitment, training, educational, and religious programs for their youth and adults.

Photos from the ceremony can be seen in the Albums.

Catholic Events

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and survived Black Friday!

Moving right along to the Christmas season, the Diocese of Orange Scouting Committee is offering a Cub Advent Day next Saturday.  It is run like a day-camp, with activities and crafts centered around the meaning of Advent and the birth of Christ.  Adult leaders and Boy Scouts will coordinate the event, and parents are welcome (but not required) to stay and participate.  Here are some details:

LOCATION: St. Bonaventure Catholic Parish, 16400 Springdale Street, Huntington Beach, CA 92649

DATE: Saturday, December 1, 2012

TIME: 8:30 am – 3:00 pm (9:00 am start)

COST: $15.00 per Scout, includes crafts, snacks and a cool patch.

RSVP: By Thursday, November 29, 2012. Tickets are available online at:  http://www.occatholicscouting.org/

For further information, contact Dani DeGrood at degrood@wwdb.org.

Also, our new bishop, Kevin Vann, will be formally installed at a ceremony on Monday, December 10, at 2:00, at the Bren Events Center on the UCI campus.  Bishop Vann is a great supporter of Scouting and is welcoming Scouts to attend the ceremony in uniform.  Unfortunately, the day and time are not convenient for most students and parents.  However, if you and your Scout would like to attend, please let me know and I will let you know where to meet.

Finally, I would like to again congratulate the Cubs and Webelos who earned their religious emblems, and thank the parents for supporting our Catholic Scouting program at Pack 811.  We continue to build an incredibly strong “Fun With A Purpose” program for our boys.

Earn A Religious Emblem

Welcome to Pack 811 parents as we begin another year of Fun with a Purpose.

Part of that purpose is all-important promise to do ones Duty to God in every corner of life: family, friends, school, church, activities, and Scouting.  Here at Pack 811, we actively encourage our Scouts to understand and fulfill that pledge, and to complete the religious emblem programs appropriate to their level.

There are programs designed for Scouts of every faith, but as a Catholic-based Pack, we focus on the Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei emblems. Tigers and Wolves work with their parents on the Light of Christ program, which stresses their relationship with Christ, the Church, and their families.  Bears and Webelos complete the Parvuli Dei or “Children of God” program, which reflects on God’s creation and providing service to others.

Both programs require completion of an activity book. The Light of Christ book is relatively straightforward. The Parvuli Dei program is a bit more involved, with a banner requirement, among others.

If you do not have an activity book and would like one, please send an email to rec@cubpack811.org.

This year, requirements must be completed by October 8, so please do not delay.

This is a busy time of year, with school and activities in full swing, but the emblem programs are truly worth the effort. Many of the activities can prompt interesting and meaningful family discussions. The emblem programs also embody our Pack’s commitment to Catholic Scouting, and provide an opportunity to connect faith and scouting in a tangible way. In keeping with their significance, medals are awarded at a county-wide ceremony for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers.  And everyone who earns an emblem may wear a purple knot on all future Scouting uniforms.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours In Scouting,

Jim Root, Religious Emblem Coordinator
