Pack Leader Awarded District Award

Our own Jim Root was recently honored at the annual Orange County Portola District Awards dinner that was held last Thursday evening.  Jim, our Religious Awards Coordinator for the past 4 years, received the districts “Extra Mile” award which is awarded to adult leaders who go out of their way to help whenever and wherever needed.  Jim has certainly answered the call whenever needed to make our program what it is today. Congratulations Jim!

Congratulations Pinewood Racers!

Another exciting Pinewood Derby was conducted last Sunday, with nearly 50 scouts vying for the coveted first place race trophy and various design ribbons.  Even siblings and dads showed off their car building in their own races.  Never before have we had such creative designs, nor closer races.  Less than 0.007 seconds separated the top three finishers.  All scouts are to be congratulated for their handiwork and great display of sportsmanship.  In addition to the racing fun, scouts were able to try on a real dragster thanks to Eagle Scout Rick, and were entertained by yet more pies in the faces of Christian and Jim.  A great day was had by all due to the hard work of many of our great parents.  Check out pictures of the event in our photo albums.

University of Scouting Registration

Registration for this year’s University of Scouting is now open on line. Please click the link below to view course offerings and registration:

https://sites.google.com/site/ocbsauniv/home

The University of Scouting is a 1-day “crash course” for a variety of scouting leadership skills. This year it will be held on Saturday, March 3rd at Santa Ana College.  Over 100 courses will be offered, and you select which courses to take based upon your current or future position, or any interest you may have.  ALL leaders are highly encouraged to attend if you can.  This one day also counts the same as one year’s worth of roundtable meetings towards any leadership recognition knot.

Time to Order Your Pack Apparel!

It is time again to order our yellow “class B”  T-shirts,  and we are taking orders so we can be sure to get enough supply for everyone.  Note that this year we will have different shirts for the Webelos Scouts,  and we are also offering T-shirts for siblings and family members so everyone can feel a part of the pack family.  If your Wolf or Bear scout already has a yellow class B shirt, there is not a requirement to purchase another unless you would like.  The way these boys grow and play, however, it’s always a good idea to get a few extra.

We are also making available optional lightweight jackets with our pack number or logo embroidered on the front.  These can be used to hold all those patches that don’t go on the regular scout uniform.  Note while the youth jacket sizes seem to be standard, the adult jackets do run a little small.

To help keep track of these orders, we now have a Pack Store on our website (it is located on the Parent Resources Menu).  You will be asked to create a unique store log-in when you check out. Please place your orders as soon as possible!

Family Camp 2011

What is Family Camp? Family Camp is an opportunity for all Cub Scouts and their families to enjoy an outdoor camping experience together in a non‐challenging, low‐stress environment. For many young scouts & their families, this may be the first time they have ever slept outdoors or set up a tent. Family Camp is an easy and safe way to learn about outdoor adventure. Most of all, this is an opportunity for our entire pack family to better get to know each other and have some fun!  Activities include archery, bb guns, swimming, hiking, and a variety of Cubmaster Christian’s wildly fun pack activities.

Dates: Starts on Friday, August 12, 2011, 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm check‐in . Ends on Sunday, August 14, 2011, 12:00 noon check‐out.

Location: Orange County Outdoor Education Center (Next to Irvine Park).  The center features a dining hall, showers, and flush toilets.

Meals:  All meals will be provided by the camp, except for Friday evening meal. Campers are welcome to bring their own between‐meal snacks if desired.

Cost: $55.00 per person for the weekend (including meals), if paid by the June 15th campfire. ($70 per person after the 15th, IF there is still space available.)

What to bring: The basics include tent, sleeping bags, Class A scout uniform, Class B Scout uniform, swimsuit & towel, other casual clothes as needed, toiletries. A more complete checklist will be provided at a later date.

Who is eligible to attend: All scout members of Pack 811 may attend. Each scout must have at least one parent or legal guardian with them in camp. Scouts must all sleep in tents with their parent or guardian – no sleepovers with their buddies. Immediate family members of the scouts may also attend, but not extended family members and other friends.

How to sign up: Sign up on-line HERE, or at the pack meeting on May 22.  Payment is required to confirm reservation.  Checks should be made out to Cub Pack 811.

Wolves Hit the Trail

A dozen wolves and their families were spotted on the hills around the Oak Canyon Nature Center on Sunday afternoon.  The scouts held their den meeting in the canyon, learning a skit and planting vegetable seedlings for a home taco garden.   Following the meeting, the boys led their families on a grueling 2 mile hike up and around the canyon hills.   The scouts managed to keep their parents and siblings from falling in the running stream or getting too close to poison oak in the lush landscape.  With their 10 essentials on their backs, they came to the rescue of one sibling who scraped his hand, quickly administered first aid before continuing on.  A great time was had by all.

Check out pictures of the outing in the Wolf Photo Album.

Summer Day Camp Announced

Summer is right around the corner, and this summer our pack has decided to attend our own district’s day camp at nearby Firestone Scout Reservation.  Our boys will be able to experience camp in a real Scout Camp, and parents will still be able to enjoy a local destination to drop off and pick up their scouts during the week.

What is Day Camp?  Cub Day Camp is five full days of fun activities, advancement, and fellowship, and is one of the highlights of the Cub Scout Summer. This year’s theme is Exploring Your World and the camp will be held the week of July 25-29. Typical days run from 9:00 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon.

In addition to the fun activities had at previous years’ day camps, Firestone offers a BB-Gun rangefor those interested.  This is always a big hit for Cubs.  Other activities include: Archery, Wood Working, Sports Fun, Cooking, Wildlife Conservation, and a variety of Scout Skills.

The cost for five full days of scouting fun is only $130 per scout, however a discounted rate of $95 is available to those who participate in the Scout-O-Rama drive and turn in applications and fees by the April Pack Meeting.  Be sure to sign up now for the Scout-O-Rama drive in order to be eligible for this discount.

Note that many Tigers, Wolves, and Bears complete many of their rank achievements in this week of camp.  Attending camp will insure your scout is off to a great start towards his new rank.  Keep an eye out for applications and a sign up form that will be posted on-line in the next few weeks.

Wolf Den to Hit the Links

The Wolf Den will have a Golf Outing on Friday, February 25th at the Brea Creek Golf Course.  The scouts will receive a lesson from Jim Howe, the golf instructor at the course.   All equipment will be provided.

Scouts will meet at the SAM lunch benches at no later than 3:00pm with their signed permission slip and $7 fee.  Click >HERE< for more information, and >HERE< for the Permission Slip.  Parents are encouraged to bring cameras!  Please contact Scott Wemple if any questions.

Important Calendar Updates

Happy Friday Everyone!

Our annual Blue and Gold Banquet has been moved one week earlier than previously scheduled to Saturday, February 26th, from 4:00pm to 7:30pm.  This allows us to celebrate the event in February, which is designated as the Cub Scout “Birthday” month.   Look for a formal announcement and RSVP request in the coming weeks.  You will not want to miss this grand event!

Even though we just put away the Christmas decorations, many of us are already starting to plan our Summer.  Here are some other important dates to remember when making those plans:

Wednesday, June 15: Advancement Campfire

Saturday, June 25: Bike Rodeo

Monday July 18 – Friday, July 22: Day Camp

Saturday, July 30: Space Derby

Friday, August 12 – Sunday, August 14: Family Camp

Of course, all of these pack events and more can be found on our CALENDAR.

I know our Pinewood Derby Committee is busy making preparations for the big race next weekend.  Check out the Resource Page for some links to last minute Pinewood Derby hints if you need them!

Scout Sunday 2011

All Scouting families are invited to join together for Scout Sunday, a day designated to allow scouts to show their commitment to our “duty to God”.   This year’s Scout Sunday mass will be held on February 6th at 9:30.   Scouts are requested to assemble in front of the Church in full Class A uniforms no later than 9:15a.m.

Let’s show our parish the strength and commitment of the St. Angela scouting ministry!

Wolves Show Their Christmas Spirit

The Wolf Den showed their Christmas Spirit this month when they sang Christmas carols to the the wonderful residents of the Emertus Senior Home in Brea. More than a dozen scouts did a great job of singing classic songs such as Silent Night, Joy to the World, and of course, Santa Clause is coming to Town. Thanks to Paul Hinz who accompanied the scouts on piano. Following the recital, the scouts passed out Christmas cards that they had created in their den meeting a week before to over 70 residents. Some of the residents did not want the show to end. Hot chocolate and Christmas cookies were enjoyed afterwords.   All of the scouts brought a little more joy to the world that evening.  See a video of the singing wolves in the Photo Albums.

Hi Scouts,

Our pack has been invited to attend a special 3D screening of the new Disney movie “Tangled“.  Your entire family is invited to attend.  Best of all, it is free!   We will have a special section reserved for us at the Irvine Spectrum, on Saturday, November 13, at 9:00am.   I will be handing out passes at the ACT food drive event this Sunday, and will have some available for pick up during the week.  A limited number of passes are available, so to reserve yours, you can sign up here.   The movie opens to the general public on November 24th.

Scouts should wear their class B pack T-shirt.  Unfortunately, this is the same day our Webelos dens will be at the 100th anniversary encampment, but all scouts not attending the encampment are welcome to join us.
