Scouts Aim for Big Prizes!

Just TWO more weeks remain for our biggest fundraiser of the year.  So far our scouts have done a fantastic job – selling almost 30% more in this year’s show and sell events than last year’s.  With the addition of the first aid kit option, we expect big numbers for those take home sales as well! Besides helping parents lower their costs for camp and other pack events, your scout’s sales also help earn themselves some very cool prizes!  Mr. Wemple will be awarding the first of these prizes with an iPod Shuffle raffle for those who worked a shift at the Church or banks at tomorrow’s pack meeting.  Click on the prize sheet to see all of the prizes available this year.

All take home order sheets must be turned into your Den Leader,  Mr. Lising or Mr. Remley by Saturday, October 30th. Any order sheet turned in late will not have any popcorn available for it. If possible, please retain a copy of your order form before turning in the original.    Just an idea – your scout will be in his Class A uniform after tomorrow’s pack meeting – this would be a great time to to give more neighbors a chance to buy some popcorn and first aid.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact our Popcorn Kernel.

Wolves Soar at the Miramar Airshow

img_9714Den 4 families spent the day at the Miramar Marine Corp base last weekend for an impressive display of military and civilian air power. Scouts were able to see and touch dozens of aircraft of all kind, climb up jets and walk through a vast C17 cargo plane.  Among fiery explosions, the Marines made a landing from helicopters and secured the runway.  The boys could almost touch the military tanks as they rolled by our spot on the tarmac.  The show ended with the famous Blue Angels doing acrobatic maneuvers directly overhead.  Thanks to Art Narmi who initiated and coordinated this awesome outing.  Check out more impressive pictures in the Wolf Photo Album.

Wolves Take Flight

The Wolf Den took to the sky last Friday evening when they built and flew their hand made kites. Using scissors, a saw, a yard stick, and a few raw materials, the boys crafted a version of Ben Franklin’s classic Diamond kite. Once completing the exacting steps, the boys managed to get the kites in the air despite the lack of any type of wind.  A special thanks to Paul Hinz who prepared all the materials and helped bring the kites to life. See the pictures of the great kite adventure in the photo albums.

Christmas Boat Parade 2010

Pack families are invited to join in on our December outing at the 102nd Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade on Friday, December 17 at 7:30 pm.   We will have seats reserved for us on the lawn of the Newport Sea Base.  The Sea Scouts will be selling hot chocolate and goodies, so all you need to bring is a warm blanket.

Beautiful multi-million dollar yachts, kayaks, canoes and other small boats will light up the harbor as a dazzling array of holiday lights and music fill the air. Many of the boats will be decorated with animated Christmas scenes accompanied by music and costumed carolers.

Tickets are only $5 per person.  The pack has purchased a limited number of tickets, and they will be sold on a first come, first serve basis.   Please contact Jim Remley to arrange to purchase your tickets as soon as possible to secure your spots.   Checks made out to Cub Pack 811 or exact cash will be accepted.

This is a great way to share in some Christmas Cheer with our pack family.

Day Camp Update

Greetings Parents and Day Camp Volunteers!

Day Camp is just a few days away.  This year, Pack 811 will be the largest contingent at the camp.  Thank you to all of you parents who signed up to volunteer at camp — you are helping us demonstrate to others how seriously we take the Scouting ideal of Service.

Here some some essentials about camp:

Dress should include the camp T-shirt, shorts or jeanscomfortable closed-toed shoes, and a layer of sun screen.  A den hat is advisable.  We will be distributing the camp T-shirts at the Bike Rodeo this weekend.  Your Den Leader will have your shirts available the first day of camp for those who can’t make the Rodeo.

Check-in time is between 8:00 and 8:20. On Monday morning you will check in at the main camp tables, and on every other day you will sign in and out with your Den Leader.  DO NOT drop off or pick up your child without signing in or out — doing so will trigger a mandatory camp-wide search procedure.  Pick up time is between 3:15 and 3:30.  If your scout will be dropped off or picked up by another parent, they must have a signed release from you.  There will be no charge to enter Craig Park for drop off and pick up during the above times.  If you are late or early, you will be required to pay the entrance fee ($3) to drive into the park.  For those Volunteers who did not make the training sessions, you can pick up an all day parking pass from your den leader (you still need to enter and exit during the above times).

Everyone who attends camp should bring a sack lunch, water / Gatorade, and sun screen.  A camp chair or blanket is advisable.

Following are the parent volunteers acting as Den Leaders during the week.  Please look for them for the daily sign in and out:

  Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
Tigers  Rox B / Lena Q Roz E / Vic G Elva P / Rox B Jeff M / Rox B  Carlos Q / Roz E
Wolves Jim R / Jeff H Jeff H / Robin B Jim R / Matt C Amy H / Mari R Jim R / Shawn J
Bears  Patty D / Roz E  Patty D / Darlene R / Jim R  Patty D / Roz E Dean G / John D

The Tiger den is looking for a rolling ice chest and wagon to use for the week.  Please contact Roz if you can provide one.   All others who signed up to volunteer can contact Margaret Palmer to sign up for one of the activity stations if you haven’t already done so.

See you Monday morning!

Campers Get Ready!

Cubs and their families are looking forward to our Family Camp-out this weekend, June 18 in Cabrillo Beach.  Check-in time at the camp is between 4:15 and 7:30pm.  Those that arrive earlier will be able to park in closer parking spots.  Be sure to bring a smile and camp fire story to share with the rest of the pack families as this is a great opportunity to bring our large Pack Family closer together.

Please contact Mike Glasgow if you have any questions or concerns about camp.

Tigers Learn Scout Skills

The Tiger Den learned some new scout skills this month.  The boys practiced some basic first aid, how to tie a square knot, and how to set up a tent.  They are ready to show those Webelos a thing or two at Family Camp!

Scouts who didn’t make our den meeting can still practice their square knot using our new KNOTS PAGE.  (Just remember: right over left, then left over right!)

The Tigers are now looking forward to preparing dinner for their parents and participating in some fun games at our family picnic on May 14th at 5pm.  Parents should look for a sign up sheet in their email in the next few days.  This will be our last den gathering as “Tigers” as we will look forward to howling like Wolves at the June campfire.

Pack Meeting This Sunday April 18th

Hi Tigers,

The deadline to turn in achievements for this Sunday’s Pack Meeting is by the end of Thursday, April 15th.  Please email Jim all completions of rank requirements or any of the sports belt loops discussed in our den meeting so they can be awarded at the Pack Meeting.   Remember if you played on a sport team in the past year, the only remaining requirement is to explain the rules of the sport to an adult.

For those who missed the meeting, worksheets are available here:
BaseballBasketballSoccerHiking (Hiking completed at Den Meeting)
For those who attended Day Camp last summer, here is a copy of the Outdoor Activity Patch worksheet.

We will be practicing our fishing knots and casting at the Pack Meeting, so be sure to join us. The Pack will also have sign ups for the Fishing Trip (April 24), Family Camp (June 18-20), and Day Camp (July 19-23).  Please be sure to bring your check for Family Camp.

Don’t forget to practice our “secret” yell!  We need both Tigers and their parents to show their spirit.   We are starting our Spring recruitment drive this Sunday as well.  If your Tiger has friends who will be entering first through fifth grades next year and would be interested in joining the pack, feel free to invite them to our pack meeting.

See you Sunday!
Jim

Boys Life Magazine Should be Coming Soon.

Many of you may have received a renewal notice for the Boys’ Life Subscription.  Please discard this notice.  The pack automatically signs all boys up for a subscription every year when we re-charter.  This year, our council experienced a delay in processing the recharters which caused the BSA to send out the notices.  Our District Rep assures me that this has been resolved and all of our boys will soon be getting their next issue of the magazine.  For those that can’t wait, the magazine also has a home on the web:  http://boyslife.org/.

Tigers Look Ahead to April

April is “Jungle Safari” month for the Tiger Den.  We will start off with the scavenger hunt with the ferocious animals at the Santa Ana Zoo this Saturday, April 3rd at 9:15.   Please be sure to get permissions slips to Naila Currie if your Tiger is going with another parent.

Easter vacation is a great time to catch up on the Rosary Patches.  We will be finishing up the Sorrowful Mysteries and starting the Glorious Mysteries at our next den meeting.  check the Parent Resource Page to download the patch summaries and coloring pages.

Our next den meeting will be on Sunday, April 11th at 11am.  Check out the full agenda via the Tiger Den Page.    Finally, don’t forget about the pack fishing trip on Saturday, April 24th.

If you haven’t visited the Photo Albums recently, you’ll find new pictures from our den hike as well as scout day at SAM (under Pack events).

Thank you to the super parents who have already signed up to help the den for the next year.  For those who haven’t yet, you can now sign up directly on the website.  Click on the “Parent Sign-Ups” button on the Tiger Den Page to complete your entry (note you must log in to access this page).

Wishing everyone a very blessed Easter!

Tigers Witness USS Dewey Commissioning

dsc09157The Tiger Den and their guests witnessed the commissioning of the Navy’s newest warship in Seal Beach on March 6.  The USS DEWEY DDG 105 is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer.  Guests listened to a variety of dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen.  After the commissioning, the Tigers walked the narrow hallways of the ship and saw the on-board medical clinic, mess hall, and command center.  See the Tiger Albums for pictures of the outing.

The Tigers Prepare to Roar in February

Another busy month is in store for the Tiger Den.  Our next Den meeting is this Sunday, February 7th (Scout Sunday) at 11:00 at the SAM lunch area.  Our theme this month is “Family”.   Please be on time to participate in the cool game that Mr. Jamison has planned.

Family Scrap Book: Scouts will be constructing a “family scrap book” at the meeting.  Please bring 5 – 8 photos (or color copies of photos) that your son can paste into his scrapbook. This will be the last “den” requirement needed for the Tiger Badge.
Share Time: Scouts will share what their favorite family activity is.  We will also learn a magic trick that the scouts can demonstrate at home for the rest of their families.
GoSeeIt Preview:
Mrs. Hinz.
Opening / Closing Flag Ceremonies :
Tyler H. / Chad H.

Snack: The Currie’s

Rosary Series:
Those scouts that have finished the two Rosary Mysteries series we have been working on (The Joyful Mysteries and the Luminous Mysteries) will have a short review at the meeting with Mrs. Biederstadt.  Click on the patches for the Summary and coloring pages.

Emergency Preparedness Award:
Those scouts that have finished the Emergency Preparedness Award requirements may turn in their sign off sheets.  Remember that this also accomplishes Tiger Requirements 3f(a) and 3f(b).

Tiger Advancement:
A link to the achievement record can now be found on the Tiger Den Page.  The password required to open the spreadsheets will be emailed to den families.  Please be sure to email Jim R all accomplished achievements prior to Feb 16 in order for them to be awarded at the Blue and Gold luncheon.  We have several scouts very close to earning their Tiger Badge, however,  there is plenty of time after the Blue and Gold for all scouts to earn the badge.
